fibber, you

fibber, you
This is mainly an expression used by children, or by young women who wish to avoid the harshness of ‘you liar’. The origin of ‘fib’, meaning a falsehood, especially a trivial one, is lost in obscurity. The variant ‘fibster’ has occasionally been used, as in Vanity Fair, by William Thackeray, where Lord Steyne says to Becky: ‘You silly little fibster! I heard you in the room overhead, where no doubt you were putting a little rouge on.’
